Refrigerant Changes Explained

Air conditioning refrigerants are transitioning toward lower global warming potential (GWP) compounds as regulatory frameworks tighten. R-32 and newer blends are becoming standard in new equipment from major manufacturers.

For homeowners, this does not mean existing R-410A systems are obsolete overnight. Licensed technicians can still service and recharge compliant systems. Parts and refrigerant remain available, though long-term trends favour newer platforms.

New installs benefit from improved efficiency and environmental credentials of current-generation refrigerants. Manufacturers design outdoor units specifically for these compounds - retrofitting new refrigerant into old hardware is not supported.

Commercial portfolios should track equipment age and refrigerant type in asset registers. Planning replacement cycles before mandated phase-downs avoids emergency upgrades and supply-chain pressure.

We specify current-generation equipment on all new installs and advise honestly on repair-vs-replace when older systems need major refrigerant circuit work - balancing regulatory context against your actual budget and timeline.
