Energy Ratings Explained

Energy star ratings compare the efficiency of air conditioners under standard test conditions regulated in Australia. Higher stars mean lower electricity consumption for the same output - and lower running costs over the life of the system.

Look at both cooling and heating star ratings if you are choosing reverse cycle. Melbourne homes use heating heavily through winter, so a strong heating rating is just as important as cooling performance in summer.

Inverter technology, variable-speed compressors, and correct sizing all affect real-world efficiency beyond what the label shows. An oversized system cycles on and off frequently, wasting energy and reducing dehumidification. An undersized system runs flat out without reaching set temperature.

Installation quality matters too. Poor refrigerant charge, leaky ductwork, or incorrect airflow balance can erode the efficiency you paid for on the label. Always use licensed installers who commission and test the system at handover.

We recommend systems that balance upfront cost with long-term savings - and we explain expected running costs for your specific usage patterns, room sizes, and insulation levels during consultation.
